psa's Reholder service places an already graded card into its latest holder with a current label. The card generally keeps its grade, authentication result, and certification number, according to PSA's Reholder service description. Reholdering therefore changes the packaging, not the established identity of the certification.
A PSA 9 does not become a PSA 10 simply because its holder looks newer. PSA describes the service as a solution for older or worn holders. It does not claim that the updated holder creates additional market value, so any expected premium remains buyer-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Why Might Buyers Prefer a Newer Holder?
A newer slab can address concerns about authenticity and tampering. PSA's security overview lists QR certificate verification, fugitive ink, UV features, LightHouse technology, and a holder designed to reveal tampering more readily. Those features may matter when an older label looks unfamiliar or a holder is badly scratched.
A buyer may feel more comfortable verifying and displaying the card in its current packaging. Confidence, however, is not the same as a price premium. The updated security does not change the card's grade or certification identity, and PSA publishes no standard percentage increase for reholdered cards.
Will the Numbers Work for Your Card?
PSA's lowest current Standard reholder option costs $12.99 per card and carries an estimated turnaround of 80–90 business days, as shown on PSA's current service page. Shipping, insurance, and the cost of waiting can raise the effective expense. Suppose you expect a newer holder to add only $15 to the selling price.
The $12.99 service charge would consume nearly all that increase before the other expenses, leaving little chance of higher net proceeds. The calculation becomes more favorable when the existing slab has obvious presentation problems that could discourage buyers. It becomes less favorable for inexpensive or slow-selling cards where even a modest premium is uncertain.
Reholdering Is Not Risk-Free Processing
PSA inspects every Reholder submission rather than automatically transferring each card. It may refuse the service if the holder, label, information, or grade does not pass review, including when the card's condition has changed or new counterfeit information has emerged.
Check the slab before submitting it: A refusal can disrupt both the sale timeline and the expected economics. Reholdering should not be treated as a guaranteed cosmetic exchange.

Reholder, Regrade, or Crossover?
Choose reholdering when you want to preserve the existing certification while replacing an old or damaged case. Choose regrading when the purpose is to seek a new assessment, not merely updated packaging. A crossover is different again.

Before submitting, compare the realistic increase in net sale proceeds with every service and shipping cost.
