Your Charizard is worth grading only when it can earn a top grade and clear the fee. Grading means paid authentication, a 1–10 score, slab sealing and population entry described by SYND, so condition and value decide.
A slab does not create value. It certifies condition. You decide by checking wear and raw price before you submit.

What grading does to your card
SYND describes grading as sending a raw Charizard to PSA, Beckett, CGC or TAG. The company authenticates the card and assigns a 1–10 condition score. It then seals the card in a tamper-evident slab and adds it to a public population report.
The slab holds the card in its graded state. The score separates one copy from thousands of others. The population entry makes scarcity visible to buyers.
What does a 10 require?
PSA defines Gem Mint 10 as virtually perfect with four sharp corners, full gloss and no staining. Centering must be no worse than about 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back, according to PSA's grading standards. CGC Cards uses a 10-point scale with a stricter top step. Pristine 10 means flawless under 10x magnification.
Gem Mint 10 allows one criterion short of perfect with similar 55/45 front centering. A soft corner, light scratch or weak centering can drop a grade. For Charizard, one grade can mean a large price gap. Judge your card under bright light before you pay.
What you will pay and wait
Collectors submitting Charizards face about $19–$300+ per card and 5–160 business-day turnarounds in 2026, according to SYND's 2026 grading guide. SYND reports PSA holds about 72% of major-grader volume.
Faster service costs more. Cheaper tiers wait longer. Match the tier to the card value so fees do not swallow profit.
When does a Charizard pay off?
A 1999 1st Edition Shadowless Base Set Charizard in PSA 10 sold for $550,000 in December 2025. TCG Drop Radar lists the Heritage sale in sales records. Only 124 of 4,993 graded copies reached PSA 10. BetterPop population data show sharp vintage scarcity. The 1st Edition Base Set has 123 PSA 10s from 5,823 graded, about 2.1%.
Shadowless has 58 from 15,296, about 0.4%, far below modern gem rates. TCGrader notes raw cards under about $30 generally need PSA 9.5–10 to cover fees, as detailed in TCGrader's 2026 grading guide. Only about one in five collector-chosen submissions reaches gem-mint. A low grade can leave a $10 card still worth $10 in plastic. Check these before you submit: If your card fails two checks, keep it raw or sell it ungraded. If it passes all five and comps support the fee, submit at the right tier.
- Raw sales above $30 for the same version
- Four sharp corners with no white edge wear
- Full gloss, no scratches, stains or print lines
- Centering that looks even front and back
- Clean back edges, because back centering is strict
