Base Set Pokemon Cards: First Edition vs Unlimited Prices

First Edition Base Set cards sell for many times the price of Unlimited copies in the same grade. Pojo.com lists Charizard #4/102 in PSA 7 at $15,000 for First Edition versus $1,500 for Unlimited. Base Set is the original English Pokemon card release. First Edition was its earliest print run with the smallest supply, while Unlimited was mass-printed through 1999-2000 and remains the most common version.

How do you tell the versions apart?

First Edition cards carry a small black Edition 1 stamp below the left edge of the art. They also lack the drop shadow around the art border. Shadowless cards have no stamp and no shadow.

Unlimited cards have no stamp plus a shadowed art border, as The Gamer explains in its visual guide to Shadowless versus First Edition. That shadow check separates most Unlimited copies quickly. The stamp check confirms true First Edition status.

How big is the Charizard price gap?

The top end shows the widest spread. Heritage Auctions reports a PSA Gem Mint 10 First Edition Charizard sold for $550,000 in its Dec. 12-13, 2025 sale, topping its prior $420,000 record in its record $550,000 sale announcement.

Current retail guides place PSA 10 Unlimited Charizard around $15,000-$20,000. Total Apex Entertainment describes that level as a small fraction of a gem-mint First Edition copy. The gap persists at lower grades. Pojo.com lists First Edition PSA 10 Charizard at $250,000 in its June 2021 guide, against the ten-to-one PSA 7 spread noted above, in its Base Set PSA price guide.

Why does First Edition cost so much more?

Supply is the main driver. First Edition was the first Base Set print run, while Unlimited received large repeat printings. Population reports show the result.

About 121 PSA 10 First Edition Shadowless Charizards exist, versus an estimated 5,000-7,000 PSA 10 Unlimited Charizards. That scarcity concentrates bidder competition. More collectors chase far fewer gem-mint First Edition copies.

What should you verify before buying or selling?

Grade can move value more than edition alone. PSA 9 to PSA 10 carries roughly a 10-20x premium for Charizard in both editions.

Small condition differences therefore change thousands into tens of thousands. Compare only sales with matching grades and certification.

  • Confirm the Edition 1 stamp location and ink
  • Confirm shadowed or shadowless art border
  • Match PSA grade, cert number, and auction date
  • Use same-grade First Edition and Unlimited sales
