Raincoat Pikachu and Mudkip Price Swings: $8.4 Million Sales vs Goldin Bids

A PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu sold for $8,400,000 including buyer’s premium at Fanatics Collect on September 27, 2026, and a different PSA 10 copy of the same card sold through Goldin for $1,037,000 on October 11. A third PSA 10 is now in Goldin’s 30th Anniversary Auction, where the bid stood at $125,000 on the evening of October 24.

As of October 24, 2026: two Mudkip cards follow the same pattern. The Art Academy Mudkip sold for $3,720,000 on September 25 and the Gold Star Mudkip for $1,020,000 on September 20, both PSA 10 at Fanatics Collect. Copies of both are live at Goldin, bid at $243,000 and $205,000. Bids are not sales; Goldin’s lots move into extended bidding, open to all, from 10 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 25.

What happened to Raincoat Pikachu prices

The card is the 2015 Japanese XY promo from the Pokémon Art Academy contest, drawn by Y. Fujishima: Pikachu in a red raincoat under an orange umbrella. Goldin’s lot description says the contest winners each received 100 copies of their winning card, which is why collectors treat the Art Academy promos as a small, odd corner of the hobby.

Until this autumn the PSA 10 traded in the low five figures. Fanatics Collect’s own sold-items list, read on October 24, shows these earlier PSA 10 results, all including the buyer’s premium:

Date Venue Raincoat Pikachu PSA 10 Sale or bid
Sep 24, 2023 Fanatics Collect $13,800 Sale
Mar 24, 2024 Fanatics Collect $16,200 Sale
Jul 28, 2024 Fanatics Collect $12,600 Sale
Jun 1, 2025 Fanatics Collect $19,200 Sale
Jul 24, 2025 Fanatics Collect (Premier) $17,400 Sale
Sep 27, 2026 Fanatics Collect $8,400,000 Sale
Oct 11, 2026 Goldin (reported by SI) $1,037,000 Sale
Oct 24, 2026, evening Goldin, live lot $125,000 ($152,500 with premium) Bid, not a sale

The $8.4 million result is the second-highest price reported for any Pokémon card. Dexerto, crediting Men’s Journal, said the lot “drew 64 bids and closed at $8.4 million with Fanatics’ 20% buyer’s premium included”, and placed it behind the Pikachu Illustrator that Logan Paul sold for $16.4 million in February.

A note on the date: the Fanatics auction closed late on the night of September 27 Eastern time, and several outlets wrote September 28, which is the date in UTC. We use September 27 because that is the date Fanatics prints in its own sales history.

Same grade, very different numbers

Two weeks after the record, Sports Illustrated’s weekly sales countdown reported a second Fujishima Pikachu, also graded PSA 10, at $1,037,000 through Goldin on October 11. That is $7,363,000 less than the Fanatics copy fetched (our subtraction of the two reported prices). Nothing in the public listings explains the gap card by card; both are the same promo in the same grade.

The third copy, lot 31 in Goldin’s 30th Anniversary Auction, showed a current bid of $125,000 from 7 bids when we read it about 23 hours before extended bidding. Goldin displays $152,500 with its buyer’s premium added, a 22% premium on top of the current bid (our arithmetic from the two figures on the lot page). The lot can still move a long way: Goldin’s format lets anyone bid during open extended bidding, which runs in 30-minute intervals until bids stop.

How many PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachus exist

This is where the Raincoat card and the Mudkips part ways, so the counts below are kept separate. Kotaku, in a piece published September 30, 2026, cited Polygon’s reading of PSA’s population report and said PSA “lists a whopping 57 of them in Gem Mint PSA 10 condition”. Fanatics’ listing from the September 2023 sale showed a PSA 10 population of 48 at the time, so the count has been rising as more copies are graded.

A card with dozens of PSA 10 slabs can produce a very wide range of results, because each auction reflects only the bidders taking part that week. For a primer on reading these counts, see our guide to how to read a Pokémon population report.

The Mudkip cards: two sales, two live bids

Art Academy Mudkip (Daisuke Ochiai), PSA 10

This is the Mudkip from the same 2015 Art Academy contest, drawn by Daisuke Ochiai. Its PSA 10 population is tiny. Goldin’s lot text calls its copy “one of just three total copies of this exceptionally scarce piece recorded in PSA’s census reporting”; when Fanatics sold a PSA 10 on September 25, 2026, its listing read “PSA Population 1 of 2”.

Fanatics’ sold-items list shows that copy at $3,720,000 including premium in its September Premier Auction. The same list shows a PSA 10 at $42,000 in November 2024. At Goldin, lot 2 had a current bid of $243,000 from 20 bids on October 24, or $296,460 with premium.

EX Team Rocket Returns Gold Star Mudkip, PSA 10

The Gold Star Mudkip is a different card altogether: a 2004 English holo from EX Team Rocket Returns. It is far more common in top grade. Goldin’s Art Academy Mudkip description says the Gold Star version has been graded PSA 10 42 times.

Fanatics recorded a PSA 10 Gold Star Mudkip at $1,020,000 including premium on September 20, 2026. The prior PSA 10 on that list sold for $20,400 in December 2024, and one in December 2023 brought $5,160. In Goldin’s current auction, lot 3 showed a bid of $205,000 from 17 bids on October 24.

Together, the two September Mudkip sales come to $4.74 million (our sum of the two Fanatics prices).

Card (PSA 10) PSA 10 count, as reported September 2026 sale Goldin bid, Oct 24 evening
Raincoat Pikachu (Fujishima) 57 (Kotaku via Polygon, Sept 30) $8,400,000 (Sept 27, Fanatics) $125,000
Art Academy Mudkip (Ochiai) 3 (Goldin lot text) $3,720,000 (Sept 25, Fanatics) $243,000
Gold Star Mudkip (EX Team Rocket Returns) 42 (Goldin lot text) $1,020,000 (Sept 20, Fanatics) $205,000

Why the gaps matter to collectors

Each of these figures is one transaction, not a market value. When a single card can print $8.4 million at one house and $1,037,000 at another inside a fortnight, any single price for it is a range of individual results, and a bid seen on Saturday night says little about where Sunday’s lot will close.

There is also the question of whether a sale completes. Fanatics notes on its sold-items pages that “if a payment is not received for a sale it is removed from the sales history.” Both the $8.4 million Raincoat Pikachu and the $3.72 million Art Academy Mudkip were still listed on October 24. Buyer and seller names for those lots have not been published.

What to watch next

  • Goldin close, October 25 to 26. Extended bidding, open to everyone, begins at 10 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 25 (early Monday in UTC). The final prices for the Raincoat Pikachu, Art Academy Mudkip and Gold Star Mudkip lots will be the next data points. Our Goldin 30th Anniversary Auction preview covers the Trophy Pikachu and the other top lots.
  • Whether the September sales stay on the record. Fanatics removes unpaid sales from its history, so the list is worth rechecking.
  • The PSA 10 count for the Raincoat card. More copies graded would add supply at the top grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much did the Raincoat Pikachu sell for?

A PSA 10 sold for $8,400,000 including buyer’s premium at Fanatics Collect on September 27, 2026. Another PSA 10 sold through Goldin for $1,037,000 on October 11, as reported by Sports Illustrated.

Why did two PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachus sell for such different prices?

No public record explains it. They are the same promo in the same grade, sold two weeks apart at different auction houses. Each price reflects who was bidding in that auction, so neither is a fixed value for the card.

How many PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu cards are there?

Kotaku reported on September 30, 2026, citing Polygon, that PSA lists 57 in PSA 10. A Fanatics listing from September 2023 showed 48 at that time.

Is the Art Academy Mudkip rarer than the Raincoat Pikachu?

In PSA 10, yes. Goldin’s lot text says three copies of the Ochiai Mudkip are recorded in PSA’s census, against 57 PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachus reported by Kotaku.

Is the $125,000 Goldin bid a sale price?

No. It was the current bid on the evening of October 24, 2026. The lot enters extended bidding at 10 p.m. EDT on October 25, and the final price will not be known until bidding stops.
