Pokemon TCG Retreating vs. Switching: What a New Player Needs to Know

Retreating means paying Energy to swap your Active Pokemon with one from your Bench. Switching means using a card effect to make that swap without paying the Retreat Cost. Retreat is a manual action tied to the printed cost on the Active Pokemon. A switch comes from a Trainer or other effect and follows different rules.

How Manual Retreating Works

According to The Pokemon Company rulebook via the Pocket Monsters archive, retreating requires discarding 1 Energy attached to the Active Pokemon for each Colorless symbol in its printed Retreat Cost, then swapping it with a Benched Pokemon XY rulebook. A zero-cost Pokemon can move back for free. A high-cost Pokemon can trap Energy in the Active spot.

According to The Pokemon Company International, a player may manually retreat only once per turn, and retreating does not end the turn Pokemon TCG Glossary. The new Active Pokemon may still attack that turn. Plan retreat before attacking, not after.

Why Can't I Retreat?

You need another Pokemon on the Bench to become the new Active. According to The Pokemon Company Sword and Shield-Evolving Skies rulebook, a manual retreat cannot be done without that replacement Evolving Skies rulebook. New players with an empty Bench are stuck with the Active.

Status also matters. An Asleep or Paralyzed Active cannot manually retreat. Poisoned, Burned, or Confused Pokemon generally can still pay and retreat.

What Does Switching Do Differently?

The Item card Switch moves the Active Pokemon to the Bench and brings up 1 Benched Pokemon. It does not require paying Retreat Cost, discarding Energy, or using the once-per-turn retreat.

That distinction matters in three common spots: Because Switch and similar effects are not retreating, they remain available when manual retreat is blocked. That makes one copy a practical safety card for new decks.

  • Low on Energy: switch without discarding attached Energy.
  • Already retreated: switch after using the manual retreat.
  • Blocked by status: move an Asleep or Paralyzed Active when retreat is barred.

What Moves With Your Pokemon?

Damage counters stay on each Pokemon as it moves. Attached cards also travel with the Pokemon.

Do not expect a swap to heal damage or drop tools and Energy. Special Conditions leave the Pokemon once it reaches the Bench. Effects from an attack are also removed by moving to the Bench. Use retreat or switch to clear Sleep, Paralysis, Poison, Burn, Confusion, or a lingering attack effect.
