Pokemon TCG Deck Testing: How to Try a Strategy Before Buying Rare Versions

You can try a Pokémon TCG strategy before buying rares by building the 60-card list in TCG Live and testing it against AI. You can also proxy the costly cards for casual table games if your opponent agrees. Deck testing means playing a list to check draw consistency and combos. A proxy is a stand-in card used for casual trials, not a real collectible.

Start Free in Pokémon TCG Live

Pokémon TCG Live is the official free-to-play client for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. GameSpace notes in its beginner's guide that players can collect digital cards, build 60-card decks and battle others without buying physical cards. That makes it ideal for testing play value before chasing a rare print.

The Pokémon Company says new and returning players receive free starter decks, Battle Pass decks, packs, Trade Credits and Collector Crates. Use those rewards to assemble current strategies at no cost. Start with a theme close to your target list, then edit toward the expensive version.

How Does Test Deck Mode Work?

The deck editor includes a Test Deck function for custom lists. Esports.gg explains in its install and play guide that the mode pits a custom list against an AI opponent.

You can practice opening draws and combos before joining versus matches. Use this loop to avoid buying the wrong counts:.

  • Build the 60-card target list in TCG Live
  • Run Test Deck against AI for draw flow and combo speed
  • Adjust trainer and energy counts, then retest before versus play

How Do You Get Test Cards Without Paying?

Screen Rant reports that TCG Live turns duplicate digital cards into Credits based on rarity. You can spend those Credits to craft specific missing cards for a test list. That lets you trial a supporter line or attacker count without opening packs.

The builder at pkmn.gg validates lists and simulates draws, according to its deck-builder page. Build there, export to TCG Live, then craft only what the test needs. Buy physical rares only after the digital list plays consistently.

Can You Proxy a List for Tabletop Play?

For physical trials, TCG Stacked advises in its proxy guide that players can print proxies or write details on slips sleeved with bulk cards. Do this only with both players' agreement. Sleeve them uniformly so draws stay random.

Player-made proxies are barred from sanctioned tournaments. The Pokémon Floor Rules state in the official Ver. 2.7 document that only a judge may approve a proxy to replace a card damaged during that event. Keep proxies to kitchen-table and casual League testing.

How Do You Check Legality Before You Buy?

The deck builder at pkmn.gg checks lists for Standard, Expanded and GLC formats. It also simulates Test Hands to show likely opening draws. Export the legal list to TCG Live for final AI and versus trials.

If the strategy needs three copies of a pricey supporter to function, you learn that before ordering. If a budget attacker performs well, you can save the rare slot for another deck. Order singles only after format, draws and feel all pass.
