Opening a slab—the sealed, tamper-evident holder around a graded Pokémon card—does not automatically change the card's physical condition or assign a new numerical grade. It ends the slab's certification and guarantee, while resale value may lose some or all of the graded premium. For PSA cards, the prior grade no longer applies as a valid PSA certification once the card leaves the holder. The card can be submitted again, but its next result could be the same grade, a lower grade, or no grade at all.

What happens to the existing grade?
The number printed on the label records the card's assessment while it remained inside that certified holder. A detached label does not preserve that status after the slab has been opened. PSA states that a removed card is treated as though PSA never authenticated or graded it.
PSA also says the card may no longer qualify for grading or authentication and has no obligation to restore its former grade after resubmission. These rules appear in PSA's Authenticity and Grade Guarantee. This distinction matters when someone describes a cracked card as "formerly PSA 10" or includes the old label in a sale. That description provides history, but it does not make the raw card a current PSA 10.
When does the guarantee end?
PSA's Authenticity and Grade Guarantee becomes null and void when the card leaves its holder. The same rule covers a partially opened holder, so the guarantee does not survive simply because the card remains inside a cracked case. PSA states that there are no exceptions for cards removed intentionally or accidentally.
A slip during storage, shipping damage, or a deliberate attempt to free the card produces the same guarantee result. An opened, unsealed, or tampered PSA holder also cannot be treated as an intact certified slab. If submitted for service, the card faces fresh authentication and grading rather than automatic reholdering at its previous grade.
What can happen after resubmission?
A cracked card starts a new evaluation if it returns to PSA. According to PSA's terms and conditions, review of a card from an opened or tampered holder may result in a lower grade or a raw return. The outcome depends on what the graders accept during that new review.
The former grade is not a floor, promise, or reserved result. Even if the card appears unchanged, PSA does not have to reproduce the original decision. opening also creates physical risk before any resubmission occurs. PSA warns that breaking its holder can injure the person opening it or damage the card, and PSA disclaims liability for damage caused by that process.
How should resale value be measured?
An intact slab gives buyers visible evidence of the grader, grade, and sealed certification. PSA says high grades can add scarcity and value, while Beckett says grading adds credibility that can command a secondary-market premium. Beckett also describes its BGS holder as tamper-evident on its grading page. Opening the slab removes that intact evidence. A prospective buyer may therefore evaluate the card as raw, discount it for uncertainty, or wait for a new grading result.
The old label may explain provenance, but it cannot replace the sealed holder that displayed and protected the grade. There is no universal percentage by which an opened Pokémon slab loses value. Market conditions and online sales data can change, so the useful comparison is specific: check recent sold prices for the exact card in raw condition against intact slabs carrying the same grading company and former grade, as reflected in CGC's discussion of market volatility. For example, compare the same set, card number, language, printing, and condition category. Do not estimate the loss from asking prices or from a different grade; the relevant evidence is recent completed sales for the raw card and the intact graded version.
