Error or Damage? How the Difference Changes a Pokemon Card Price

Learn when a factory anomaly may earn a premium—and when a flaw should simply reduce a Pokémon card's condition value.

A genuine factory error can raise a Pokémon card's price when collectors want it, while ordinary damage usually lowers the price through a weaker condition assessment. A factory error is an imperfection created during manufacturing or printing; damage is wear or harm that occurs afterward. The distinction is not enough by itself. Buyers also consider how distinctive the anomaly is, whether it can be authenticated, the card's overall condition, and whether comparable collectors actually value that error.

What counts as an error rather than damage?

Factory errors originate during production. Examples include incomplete, misaligned, or missing texture. Damage includes later creases, stains, edge wear, folds, and similar harm. Origin does not erase the physical flaw.

TCGplayer's Card Conditioning Standards classify factory-made imperfections and post-print damage as condition-relevant. A card can therefore have a genuine error without qualifying as mint. "Fresh from the pack" does not prove error status. Packaging can leave unwanted defects, and CGC distinguishes pinched holofoil from roller damage that creates two vertical indentations on both sides.

When can an error add value?

An error has the best case for a premium when it is visually distinctive, verifiable, and desirable to specialist collectors. CGC describes incomplete, misaligned, and missing Pokémon card texture as highly sought after manufacturing errors. Rarity can magnify that demand, but one exceptional sale does not establish a pricing formula.

A faint line, small indentation, or poorly centered design should not receive an automatic premium. If collectors see only a condition problem, the anomaly can reduce the card's appeal even when production caused it.

Why damage usually reduces the price

Damage affects the card itself rather than creating a separate collectible feature. PSA examines surfaces, edges, centering, folds, creases, stains, and other damage when determining condition. Its PSA 3 standard, for example, permits visible wear and can include creasing or other damage. Severity matters.

A small surface issue and a structural crease do not have the same effect, so the useful question is not simply whether damage exists. Buyers need to know its location, visibility, and effect on the card's structure. A factory anomaly may also coexist with later damage. price the error's possible demand and the card's physical condition as separate factors instead of letting one cancel the other.

Authentication and provenance can decide the outcome

Some apparent errors can be reproduced or misrepresented. Square-cut cards are a clear warning: separately cut uncut sheets can resemble factory mistakes, so an unusual shape alone does not establish authenticity. CGC generally requires Wizards of the Coast-era square-cut cards to have provenance tracing to a WotC employee.

CGC can grade printing errors without an added error-card fee, but it may reject cards with major missing pieces or structural-integrity problems. This creates two separate hurdles. The card must first be accepted as authentic and structurally gradable; only then can a documented error compete for a collector premium.

How to evaluate an unusual card before pricing it

Do not begin with an ambitious asking price. First document what is physically present and test whether "error" is the most supportable description.

The Pokémon Company also separates manufacturing, printing, and packaging issues from damage caused by outside events. Its limited replacement policy reinforces a practical point: a card arriving damaged in a pack is not automatically an authenticated collectible error.

  • Photograph the front, back, edges, and anomaly under even light.
  • Identify whether the feature reflects printing, manufacturing, packaging, or later handling.
  • Check both sides for matching indentations, creases, or pressure marks.
  • Record the card's other condition problems separately.
  • Look for authenticated examples with the same error type, card, language, and production era.
