Team Rocket Pokemon Card Checklist: Holos, Rares, Errors, and Promos

The Team Rocket checklist covers holo rares, non-holo rares, recognized print errors, and related promos. Team Rocket is the villain-themed Pokemon card set built around Dark Pokemon and marked with an R set symbol. Use the set symbol, rarity mark, and card name to place each card. That keeps holos, rares, errors, and promos in separate groups and prevents double-counting reprints.

Table of Contents

Which cards are the holos?

Holos are rares with foil art boxes and a star rarity mark. The name usually begins with Dark, such as Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, or Dark Gyarados. The R symbol sits in the lower corner near the card number.

Some holos also appear as non-holo rares in the same set. Check foil, not only the name, before marking a holo slot filled. Wear on foil is easier to miss than edge wear.

What counts as a rare?

Non-holo rares carry the same star mark without foil in the art. Examples include additional Dark Pokemon and key Trainer cards from the Rocket theme. Commons use a circle mark and uncommons use a diamond mark.

Collectors often finish rares after holos because the cards look similar at a glance. Sort by rarity mark first, then by name. That order makes gaps obvious.

How do you handle errors?

True errors come from production, such as missing foil, shifted ink, miscut alignment, or a missing rarity or set mark. Damage, sun fading, and aftermarket stamps are not production errors.

A magnifier helps separate a print flaw from handling wear. Many odd-looking cards are normal print variation rather than listed errors. File only repeatable flaws with the error group, not one-off specks.

  • Compare the R symbol, rarity mark, and alignment with a normal copy
  • Check front and back for consistent ink and centering
  • Keep error candidates sleeved apart until compared side by side
  • Ask for authentication when value or trade status depends on the flaw

Where do promos belong?

Promos are Rocket-related cards released outside booster packs. They often carry a promo stamp, different numbering, or a distinct foil pattern. Dark Ivysaur and other Rocket-themed promo releases are examples of this separate track.

Do not merge promos into the main set sequence. Keep a second list ordered by promo marking rather than set number. Compare the promo marking under good light before filing a card as complete.
