Pokemon Autograph Authentication vs. Card Grading: Two Separate Decisions

Pokemon autograph authentication decides whether the signature is genuine. Card grading separately scores the physical card on a 1-10 scale. Authentication protects against fake signatures on real cards. Grading measures condition, so collectors may need one service, both services, or neither depending on the goal.

What does each decision measure?

Card grading judges centering, corners, surface wear, printing defects and scratches, according to PSA Getting Started / Grading Standards. It does not decide whether a later-added signature is genuine.

Autograph authentication asks whether the signature is genuine. Autograph grading separately scores ink strength, eye appeal and fidelity to the signer's typical pattern, according to OTIA reporting on PSA and Beckett services.

How does PSA show the difference?

According to PSA in its dual-grading announcement, Dual Grading authenticates the signature through PSA/DNA, then assigns two separate 1-10 grades, one for the card and one for the autograph. A strong signature grade does not raise a weak card grade.

According to PSA in its label update, blue labels mean autograph-only authentication or grading, while red labels mean item authentication and grading including Dual Service. Read the label before assuming the card condition was graded.

What should collectors check before submitting?

CGC says it guarantees authenticity only for witnessed Yellow-Label Signature Series signatures. Green-Label Qualified cards may receive a card grade, but the unwitnessed signature is explicitly not guaranteed authentic and the autograph grade is not guaranteed.

Under CGC x JSA, JSA authenticates the signature first, and CGC grades and encapsulates the card only if the signature is deemed authentic. Beckett Grading Services has hosted James Spence Authentication for on-site autograph authentication alongside card grading.

  • Decide if you need proof the signature is genuine.
  • Decide if you need a formal condition grade for value or resale.
  • Confirm whether the service requires witnessed signing or accepts an already-signed card.
  • Check whether the final holder guarantees authenticity, grades the autograph, grades the card, or does all three.

Can an authentic autograph sit on a worn card?

Yes. A signature can be genuine while the card has edge wear, soft corners, off-centering or surface marks.

Each result stands alone. A Pokemon example reported by Dexerto shows the split: a 2024 Durant ex card received card grade 8.5 Near Mint-Mint+, with the Kevin Durant signature separately graded 8 under PSA/DNA in its report on the graded Durant card. Buy the signature, buy the condition, or buy both, but price each result separately.
