A PSA Grade Guarantee review asks whether PSA's original grade or authenticity determination was materially wrong. Reholder replaces a damaged or outdated PSA case without serving as a request to reconsider the card's grade. For Pokémon cards, the right choice depends on where the problem sits: the card, the label, or the plastic holder. A scratched slab usually points to Reholder; suspected overgrading requires a guarantee inquiry.

What Each Process Is Designed to Fix
A Grade Guarantee claim concerns psa's original determination. The collector is alleging that the encapsulated card does not meet the assigned grade or, in some cases, should not have been certified as authentic. Reholder addresses the physical holder. Common reasons include cracked plastic, heavy scuffing, a damaged label, or an older holder that the owner wants replaced.
The existing certification is generally carried into the replacement holder, subject to PSA's inspection. Neither option is meant to secure a higher grade. If a collector believes a PSA 8 deserves a PSA 9, PSA's separate Review service is normally the relevant category. Service names, eligibility rules, and remedies can change, so confirm the current submission terms before shipping.
Which Option Fits Your Pokémon Card?
Start by identifying the source of the concern. Do not select Grade Guarantee simply because another grader, dealer, or buyer would assign a lower grade.
A damaged slab complicates the decision. PSA may need to determine whether the card was damaged after grading, whether the holder was compromised, and whether ordinary Reholder service remains appropriate.
- Choose Reholder when the plastic is scratched, chipped, cloudy, or cracked but the card appears unchanged.
- Contact PSA about a Grade Guarantee review when a visible card defect appears fundamentally inconsistent with the assigned grade.
- Ask about a label or mechanical-error correction when the grade seems acceptable but the set, year, card number, language, or variation is wrong.
- Use Review when you want PSA to consider raising an existing PSA grade.
- Contact PSA before submitting if both the holder and card may be damaged.
Pokémon Card Examples That Clarify the Difference
Suppose a PSA 9 Charizard has a deeply scratched case, but the scratch stops at the plastic. That is a Reholder issue because the complaint concerns presentation and protection, not the assigned grade. Now suppose an intact PSA 9 slab contains a card with a major crease that appears incompatible with that grade. That may justify a Grade Guarantee inquiry, although PSA must determine when the damage occurred and whether the guarantee applies.
A visible print line, off-center border, or small whitening spot does not automatically prove overgrading. PSA grades the entire card, and collectors may weigh individual flaws differently. Strong disagreement is not necessarily a qualifying error. If the label identifies the wrong Pokémon set or variation, the grade may have nothing to do with the problem. Photograph the card and label, then ask PSA which correction route applies rather than guessing from the submission menu.
How to Prepare a Clear Submission
Keep the card sealed in its PSA holder. Removing it can destroy evidence about the slab's condition, interrupt the certification trail, and make a guarantee claim harder to evaluate.
Before contacting PSA: Package the slab as a valuable collectible and follow PSA's current shipping instructions. A submission tier, declared value, or insurance choice does not prove the card's market value for a guarantee remedy.
- Photograph the slab front and back under even lighting.
- Capture close images of the suspected defect, label, and holder damage.
- Record the certification number and submission history you possess.
- Describe the issue precisely, such as "crease near the lower-right corner," not merely "overgraded."
- Save purchase records, insurance records, and earlier photographs when available.
Limits and Possible Outcomes
A Grade Guarantee is not an unconditional promise that every buyer will agree with the number on the label. Grading includes judgment, and PSA's current terms control eligibility, valuation, exclusions, and available remedies. PSA could uphold the grade, correct an identification issue, change the certification, offer a remedy under its terms, or determine that the problem falls outside the guarantee.
Damage after encapsulation, holder tampering, poor storage, and incomplete ownership records can affect the review. Reholder also involves inspection. If PSA sees evidence of tampering or card damage, it may pause the routine holder replacement and contact the submitter. Obtain instructions first when a crack reaches the card or the card moves unusually inside the slab.
