Pikachu Illustrator cards are among the rarest in the Pokemon TCG world, with only about 39 known to exist in total.[2][4]
This card comes from a special 1998 illustration contest in Japan run by CoroCoro magazine. Kids entered drawings of Pikachu, and the top 20 winners got these promo cards as prizes. The grand prize winner’s design became the card’s artwork, showing Pikachu with a trophy and a gold star.[2]
Why so few? The contest printed just 20 cards for the winners initially. Over time, experts and collectors have tracked down 39 unique copies through sales, auctions, and grading services like PSA. Not all are in top condition, but even worn ones fetch huge prices because of the scarcity.[2][4]
Logan Paul made headlines in 2022 by buying one in pristine PSA 10 condition for over $5 million, proving its top-dog status in the market.[2][3][4] Other sales show values from hundreds of thousands up to that record, depending on grade and provenance.
For collectors eyeing one, check grading reports and auction histories. PSA has graded a handful, but many stay in private hands. New ones rarely surface, keeping the total count stable around 39.[2]
Prices stay sky-high due to demand from big spenders and fans. A near-perfect copy can hit millions, while lower grades still sell for six figures. Always verify authenticity with experts, as fakes pop up.[1][2]
