A slab is a trading card sealed inside a rigid grading holder. A May 21, 2026 Reddit post about a PSA Zekrom delivery alleges that an eBay-authenticated slab arrived as an empty, re-taped box. What Does eBay Authentication Prove?
For an eligible purchase, the seller sends the card to eBay's authentication partner. The partner inspects it, packages it securely, and ships it onward to the buyer. This creates a separate post-authentication transit stage. A completed onward shipment indicates that the item passed the authentication inspection.
It does not prove that the outgoing package remained untouched until delivery. For graded cards, eBay says PSA examines the sealed holder for tampering and verifies the case and label. PSA does not grade or re-grade the card during this inspection. Authentication therefore describes the item at one checkpoint, not every later handoff.
What Does a Re-Taped Box Actually Show?
A re-taped box supports the possibility that someone opened or repaired the outer package. By itself, it cannot show when that happened, why it happened, or who handled the box. Keep the package evidence separate from the slab evidence. An empty box presents a missing-contents problem because there is no holder to inspect.
If the slab arrived, altered packaging alone does not establish that someone opened or replaced the card inside it. A matching certification number is also not conclusive. PSA warns that its guarantee excludes tampered or counterfeit holders or labels, even when the certification number remains valid. PSA notes that fraudsters can replace a slab's contents and reseal the holder.
What Should the Buyer Do Immediately?
Do not refuse an empty or transit-damaged delivery. eBay instructs buyers to accept it and report that the item does not match the listing.
Preserve a clear record before moving or discarding anything: Act quickly. eBay says a transit-damage request for an authenticated trading-card purchase must be opened within three calendar days, unless the seller offers a longer return window.
- Photograph every side of the box, including the label, seams, tape layers, cuts, dents, and empty interior.
- Keep the box, tape, packing material, and any authentication inserts together.
- Save the listing images, order details, tracking history, delivery notice, and seller messages.
- Write a short timeline using observations rather than accusations.
- If the package remains unopened, record one continuous opening video before breaking any seal.
How Should You Escalate the Dispute?
Start through the eBay order because eBay managed the transaction and authentication route. Describe the observable problem precisely: "The delivered box appeared re-taped and contained no slab." Do not identify a culprit unless later evidence supports that claim. Ask the seller, through eBay's messaging system, for any packing photographs, shipment receipt, or recorded package weight.
Ask eBay to review the authentication and onward-shipping records. Follow its instructions if a separate carrier claim becomes necessary. If the slab arrived but its holder appears opened, cracked, substituted, or resealed, report that as a different issue from outer-box damage. Do not open the suspected holder; photograph its seams, label, and card before sending it anywhere.
